We are in April 1887: Enrico has become a Member of Parliament, frequently travelling back and forth between Rome and Turin with Teresa, and he has managed to bring Lidia’s law before the parliamentary committee. Lidia is impatient, but she knows she must trust her brother while she continues seeing Fourneau — although, of course, she has no intention of becoming emotionally attached, getting married, or making their relationship public.
He has been promoted at work and is now serving at the Court of Assizes. His opportunity to prove his worth is the prosecution of a woman accused of murdering her husband. The problem is that the defendant is Lidia’s closest friend, Grazia Fontana, whose trial for self-defence will shake public opinion and challenge their relationships.
Jacopo, returning to Turin with his new partner, decides to stay in the city to cover the most high-profile and controversial trial of the time, a case that will put Lidia and Fourneau on opposing sides.
Proving that an abused wife killed in self-defence is a monumental challenge — a perfect case for Lidia: will she manage to convince an all-male jury to acquit Grazia Fontana, arguing that the true crime lies in the violence that was inflicted upon her and that she endured?
And when it comes to love, will she continue to believe that Fourneau is the right man for her, or will she find the courage to finally embrace the relationship with Jacopo that she has always denied herself?
Is it possible to restore balance between men and women? And if politics cannot make a difference, when society stands in our way, can we at least achieve it in our own lives?
